Summary: The Doctor thinks Rose thinks he's in love with Madame de Pompadour, and he comes to a realisation of his own.
Rose isn't talking to him - he doesn't know why - and although she hasn't asked to go home, the fear of it haunts his waking hours (and the majority of his “sleeping” ones, also).
Something Mickey says, an unguarded comment about Reinette, helps the penny finally drop for him about exactly why Rose isn't speaking to him and, much-vaunted binary vascular system or no, he is all-of-a-sudden finding it incredibly difficult to breathe.
She can't think that, can she? No. Surely not. That's impossible; utterly impossible.
Rose can't not know how he feels about her, can she?
