Summary: I was thinking about School Reunion, and the barriers The Doctor put up then between himself and Rose, and wondered what possessed him to do so; this fic was the result.
“I don't age,” he tells her. “I regenerate. But humans decay. You wither and you die. Imagine watching that happen to someone who you--” He cannot complete the sentence, unable to trust her – or himself – with his feelings, despite everything the two of them have been through together.
She's just a slip of a human girl, who'll be dust long before he regenerates, so, no matter what he feels for her, he has to build his defences even higher; she's breached them so comprehensively already it scares him.
He must protect himself against a future without her, whatever the cost.
