Summary: And yet, I think, those lies I still prefer

It's been so long, and yet the pain's still fresh
As if I only lost you yesterday;
And yet, despite the depth of my distress,
I cannot help but think it's best this way.
It's best that we now spend our lives apart,
Where I can't see how you both age and die –
Or that is what I tell my grieving hearts,
Although I know it's naught but desperate lies.
And yet, I think, those lies I still prefer;
As gloss to make the truth less hard to bear.
