Summary: It's not enough.
He can’t remember what drags him out of his funk, but something does. He goes back to his books, searching for a way to send himself through. Either with, or without, the TARDIS – he doesn’t mind (much) if he can't get back, so long as there's a way to get through.
But that, too, fails – as it must – and several belligerent (and stupid) aliens of varying species reap the rewards of that particular endeavour. The Oncoming Storm gone mad with grief, at least for a time. The temptation to cross his own timeline, to fix this even if to do so would risk invoking Reapers, has never been so strong.
But just before he makes that decision, the TARDIS saves them all: she shows him a gap between the Universes that’s almost – but, crucially, not quite – closed. Not enough to get him through – but enough, perhaps, to send a message. A billet-doux.
It's not enough. But he’ll take what he can get.

Oh that part got to me because you know he was more than a little tempted to cross his timeline and stop things from happening the way they did before. I wonder how many of us could resist such temptation if it meant we could get back the person we loved.
Poignant and lovely little ficlet.
