A thought (yes, another one) on Journey’s End in particular (and S4 in general)

Leaving aside that what happened is probably the nearest thing the PTB were ever going to let us have to a “happy” ending for our heroes, I’m wondering whether it might have been better for the Doctor had Rose not come back at all (and being an OTPer, that’s a hard statement to have to make).

Why am I thinking this? Because although if Rose didn’t come back the events of 4X13 might well have unfolded the same in Donna’s case (and the resolution of what to do with Ten II if Rose had not come back would have been interesting ... would the PTB have killed him off?), the Doctor would have healed enough from the events of S2/S3 with Donna on board (the majority of the season he’s so much happier in himself) that he would have been able to walk away sad for Donna but ultimately in a much better state emotionally.

And I think I would much have preferred that to the image we have of him from the last frames of Journey’s End, thanks very much.

I've been thinking the same thing. It probably would have been better if she hadn't come back, because I would still have all these hopes for a reunion that are now shattered and broken. Although, the ever eternal optomist that I am, I'm still hoping for another reunion to fix the last one.

Well, doesn’t the Doctor himself say “never say ‘never ever’”?

I'm wavering again.

My inner dialogue has advocates for the Doctor, for Rose, and for the show itself. I weep for the Doctor because he's alone again and has sacrificed his love for Rose for the last time. My feelings are torn for Rose because she's won and lost the man she loves, imo. I celebrate for the show because we know the Doctor will continue to travel and meet new people, and I have to hope that he will be okay.

Reading about the missing scene has been a little help in terms of Rose's situation, and posts like this one (http://community.livejournal.com/time_and_chips/5305462.html) (and that one by xanya that I linked a while ago) help me feel somewhat better about the Doctor.

I think it will be some time before I truly feel comfortable with and sure about my feelings on this, to be honest.

I know; but based on what we know he’s like without Rose, how likely is that honestly going to be?

He lies, flat-out lies to Rose in the missing-scene; that’s not someone I feel happy about. It’s certainly not the same man who’s in your icon above.

I think it will be some time before I truly feel comfortable with and sure about my feelings on this, to be honest.

Me, too, although I already know which way I seem to be headed (AU, Ten I/Rose by the looks of things). I’ll survive ;)

Don't you believe that he lied out of love, though? Wanting what he thought would be best for her? (Yes, I know he should have offered her a choice, or at least a chance to discuss it, but I do think he thought he was doing the best thing for her).

AU Ten I/Rose is fine with me :)

I’m wondering whether it might have been better for the Doctor had Rose not come back at all.

I’m wondering if it would’ve been better for Rose if she’d never come back. The first time she was trapped in Pete’s World, it was the price she had to pay for saving the world. And the Doctor burned up a sun so that they could say goodbye. The second time, he’s the one who trapped her there.

I’d never looked at it that way before (can’t tell I’m a Doctor-focussed fangirl at all, can you? ;D), but you’re right :(
