Summary: He’s not that sort of a man. Is he?

I put my hope in you.

He knows Jackie is worried about the level of influence he has on Rose.

He’s not stupid. He worked out a long time ago that that’s (if you ignore the fact he took her daughter from her for a whole year) the basis for her antipathy to him. She doesn’t trust him farther than she can throw him – and she’s right to worry, isn’t she? It’s not as if he’s the sort of man mothers should trust with their daughters.

Worried mother or no, he’s sure of this: all his faith is vested in Rose.

He cannot give her up.
