Title: Preserve Your Memories (They’re All That’s Left You)
Character(s), in order of appearance: Ten, the Master (off-camera)
Rating: U
Summary: The Doctor remembers Gallifrey
A/N: The title and text of the cut are from Old Friends/Bookends as sung by Simon & Garfunkel.
Disclaimer: Not Mine.
Setting: During the Season Three finale.

I haven’t asked you yet
If you ever could forget
How the setting suns could turn the sky to flame.
Or if the unique light
From the copper moon at night
Fills your memories and fills your hearts with pain.

Since you almost got me killed
You can see why I’m not thrilled
That you like it when I call you by your name.
Since I know it’s not in jest
You can quit acting distressed
For you are the only one there is to blame.

If you think it’s been for ever
Since you last saw Wild Endeavour
And there’s part of you that’s missing, now it’s gone;
If it doesn’t feel quite real
Just imagine how it feels
To go through it all and think you’re all alone.

For I did not forget
And they’re carried with me yet
Although Gallifrey’s now nothing but a name.
And now everybody’s gone
And we are the only ones
I have better things to do than play your games.

No; I haven’t asked you yet
If you ever did forget
How the Gallifreyan suns turned skies to flame;
Or if the shining light
Of the copper moon at night
Haunts your memories and fills your hearts with pain.

I watched "Last of the Time Lords" last night, so it's fresh in my mind. This is lovely :)

That was gorgeous. I could almost here music playing along the lyric line.

Thank you.

I could almost here music playing along the lyric line.

There’s something in the meter of it that lends itself to music, don’t you think?

Oh, that's interesting and unusual. You should write poetry more. And I liked the S&G song ref as well - that is a haunting and beautiful song, and an excellent choice.

Speaking of S&G, or at least Paul Simon, "Something So Right" makes a wonderful D/R song. Every word just fits:

If something goes wrong
I'm the first to admit it,
The first to admit it and the last one to know.

If something goes right
It's liable to lose me
Apt to confuse me,
'cause it's such an unusual sight.
Can't get used to something so right.

and of course,

Some people never say the words "I love you"
But like a child, they're longing to be told.

I’ve usually written sonnet-form when I’ve written verse in this fandom – and I’ve not done it for a bit, although I’ve about a third of what might turn into one in rough draft at the minute.

As for Simon & Garfunkel ... there’s a certain melancholy to their songs (I think it might be in Garfunkel’s voice) that draws me to them. And I’m going to chase down the lyrics to Something So Right, because the bits you’ve shown me are so Ten-like (including the pathos in that last couplet) it’s incredible.

I like how it's mostly emotional and in remembrance... but there's also this element of, "Master, you're a douche." Most of the second stanza, the end of the fourth, and the last two lines of the third.

I like it!

I like how you’ve picked out the “Master, you’re a douche” parts – yes, they’re there deliberately. I think my favourite stanza of this whole thing is probably the fourth, with the third following close behind.
