“You’re not?”

Her silence is answer enough. They know each other well enough by this stage to know when the other isn’t being entirely truthful. So she knows that she cannot lie, it just wouldn’t work.

Oh, Rose.

He closes his eyes against the tears that threaten his composure. That’s briefly successful but they tear up again when he opens them and this time he can’t hide it. The universe (or chaos, or fate, or just sheer bloody bad luck) has taken everything from him, again, and there’s nothing he can do about it.

I'm sorry, Rose; I'm so sorry.

Seriously, it's just enough. No baby Time Lords running about, just that horrible realization dawning on the Doctor. Ugh--you captured it so well it *does* make my heart ache.

As I said to principia_coh below, the way DT plays that line means (IMHO) that this is about the only way it could ever play out.

Of course, knowing RTD and co., they'll sort it so that this is completely AU by the end of Season Four! ;)
