Why is it that AU Season-Two-fic-with-Nine is A-OK on the comms, but people turn their noses up at AU Season-Three-fic-with-Rose?

Because people take AU-season-three-with-Rose as "OMG, I hated Martha, she was crap, I'm going to pretend it didn't happen and carry on with my batchip craziness".

Or something akin to that. It's considered wanky because of the huge diversity between Rose and Martha, whereas Nine and Ten are both loved, really. Nobody hates on Nine, or Ten, ergo it's ok to replace the latter with the former for the sake of an interesting read.

Hadn't thought of it that way, but I agree.

I wonder, if instead of Martha, we had Donna straight away in S3, would there be so many S3-with-Rose fics? The theory being that Donna seems to be more or less generally accepted as a good companion, in a way that Martha is not. Much in the same way that Ten was a good replacement for Nine.

Therefore, replacing Donna with Rose, instead of replacing (or supplementing) Martha, wouldn't be seen as OMGHOWDAREYOU but another case of "an interesting read".

Does that make sense? It's sort of twisty logic.

I'd love to read a good AU 3 with Rose. It would be wonderful! Really great interaction between Rose and the Master would be brilliant. Gridlock would be a nice read.

Heck, I'm beta-ing an AU 2 w/9, so it'd be a great balance in my DW world.

Neither one is A-Ok with me. It's all agenda fic and usually comes out of hatred or at least dislike for the character being replaced.

There are occasionally useful character-substitution fics, but as a whole they're usually shite.

There are plenty of people who are still in the CE-should-still-be-the-Doctor camp, which is why the cool kids won't give Ten-erasure ficcers any crap.

Unlike two of your other commenters, I've seen PLENTY of hating on Ten, both overt and in more subtle ways. As for why replacing Martha is somehow magically unacceptable? Because people who like her character get very defensive at any suggestion that she is anything less than 31 flavors of awesome, perhaps because even they're aware somewhere in the back of their minds that she was not all that and a packet of crisps.

I enjoy them, but the problem with most of them is that a) They're bitchy to Martha, and I LIKE Martha and b) They're mostly unoriginal, with no new dialogue and just giving a few of the Doctor's lesser lines to Rose.

I like Martha more now than I did then, if I’m honest, and I guess I can see where you’re at on that point.

I’ve seen quite a few on the Spoon that seem to give Rose a fair few decent lines (more than RTD managed in JE!)

Nu'in specific, I just liked that some graffitist had culturejammed the logo and I'm irritated with LNDN in general for reasons with which all my mates are familiar whether they appreciate this or not.
