Title: New, New Beginning
Rating: PG-13
Setting: 2X00
Beta(s): [livejournal.com profile] brilliantomega
Character(s): Ten. Rose.
Pairing(s): Ten/Rose
A/N: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] brilliantomega for the title. Inspired by the fact I can never get enough fic that has anything to do with The Christmas Invasion (which is a serious candidate for my favourite episode ever). All italicised dialogue from the episode.
Summary: Yet what of Rose?

“Yeah, I … I thought, ’cause you changed … you might not want me any more.”

And what of Rose? Rose, to whom he’s barely spared a thought since he woke up, other than to assume that she’d be there (and the arrogance of that assumption may yet come to bite him in the arse, although obviously he hopes it won’t). He doesn’t even know if she wants to stay with him, now she’s had time at home to think about it.

So he’ll have to do something about it. Something good. Because if she doesn’t come with him, if she doesn’t want him, all the wailing and gnashing of teeth in the world will not be enough to express what he’d feel.

He can force the issue, if he wants to. He knows enough to keep her with him, willing or no; knows tricks (last carried off, he suspects, by the Master – the less said about him, though, the better) that would bring him a willing Rose in his bed each night, if that’s what he wants. (Not that he’ll do anything; if she doesn’t want him, there’s no way he’d force her.)

He could do those things, of course he could (not that he’d forgive himself for doing it, but that’s not the issue at hand). But if she doesn’t love him, if she doesn’t really, really love him, then what would be the point?

“Oh, I’d love you to come!”

This was lovely. I love fics about this episode, and you've captured the Doctor at the moment so well. Everything about this wonderful, from the fact that he had simply assumed she would stay to that he could force her if he really wanted to.

Really interesting :D

I love this episode, full-stop (it and Tooth and Claw are arguably my favourite Who stories ever); arguably there isn't enough fic written about it!

from the fact that he had simply assumed she would stay to that he could force her if he really wanted to.

He seems to change his mind on Rose during the episode, going from a rather abrupt “oh, it’s you; you gave up on me!” outlook to a “oh my God! What’ll I do if she won’t come with me?” by the end, and I tried to show that.

On the forcing her to stay with him, I sort of had Lucy Saxon in mind on that score; I'm not entirely sure that she hadn't been brainwashed or something.

Interesting idea about Lucy... You so have to write a fic where the Doctor's comparing Lucy and Rose now, lol.

You did really well showing the two different outlooks :) Well done on that.

And reading it back through I found one more bit that I really loved: if she doesn't want him :D His insecurity there about whether she'd rather have Nine back but he can't come back, so she'd rather stay home because she doesn't want Ten. Loved it :D

The original thought I had there was whether or not she wanted him in that way, rather than as a Nine-versus-Ten thing. But both of them work just as well, I reckon.

I think it's my favourite Christmas episode, mainly because David Tennant instantly makes the Doctor his own and despite Chris Eccelstone's general brilliance you've practically forgotten he existed by the end of it. Lovely little snapshot here.

I am glad you like it!

(Your reasons for liking The Christmas Invasion are good; my main reason for liking it best is because, of the three, there’s the greatest capacity for hope.)

This part of the episode was one of the cutest scenes ever. They're so shy yet adoring! Excellent take on it, including his transformation from assuming she'll be there to being scared she won't want to come. :D

They make me go all gooey when I see this part of the episode, most of the time.

Excellent take on it, including his transformation from assuming she'll be there to being scared she won't want to come. :D

Thanks, glad you like it.

(I was looking for something that would explain his complete volte-face from the “rude-and-not-ginger” fella up on the Sycorax ship to the shy, almost gangly fella who asks her along with him at the end. Hope I managed it!)
